Thomas van der Akker

Gynaecologist and professor of obstetrics, Leiden University Medical Center, and professor of global maternal health, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Thomas van den Akker works as gynaecologist and professor of obstetrics at the Leiden University Medical Center and as professor of global Maternal health at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

He previously worked in Malawi for four years as a physician specialised in international health and tropical medicine. He also worked for Médecins Sans Frontières for a number of years. Van den Akker studied Medicine at Leiden University. In 2012, he obtained his PhD with his thesis “Medical mirrors: maternal care in a Malawian district” at the Vrije University Amsterdam. Since then he has been involved as a researcher and (co)promotor in reproductive health care projects in many different countries, especially in southern Africa.

Thomas is also Chair of the Foetomaternal Medicine Section of the Dutch Society for Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Within the supervisory board, his main area of focus is global health.
