Opinion article on UN Tax Convention by Wemos and Tax Justice NL in NRC

In an opinion article in Dutch national newspaper NRC, Barbara Fienieg (Wemos) and Arnold Merkies (Tax Justice NL) call on the Netherlands to cooperate fully in the creation of the UN Tax Convention. Currently, countries are losing billions of dollars through large-scale international tax evasion. Governments can put this money to good use for public services, such as healthcare. Read more

Wemos among 200+ organizations providing inputs to the UN Tax Convention process

Global Alliance for Tax Justice submitted a letter with inputs on the terms of reference for the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation. Wemos, along with more than 200 civil society organizations and trade unions, signed the letter. Member states will convene for a second round of negotiations on 29 July-16 August at the UN headquarters. Read more

Statement in solidarity with Kenya against austerity measures

The End Austerity Campaign (co-founded by Wemos) released a statement supporting the people in Kenya in opposing the government’s proposed austerity measures. These measures often hinder access to healthcare; hence, policymakers should adopt sustainable and human rights-focused policies. Read more

Report on BioNTech Africa: more needed to achieve sustainable regional production of medicines

The BioNTech mRNA vaccine manufacturing facility in Rwanda contributes to greater access to mRNA vaccines in Africa in the short-term, but it lacks plans and commitments to enhance sovereignty and self-reliance of the continent in access to health products in the long-term. This is the main conclusion from a case study of the BioNTech Africa facility, conducted by four public health NGOs from Africa and Europe, including Wemos. Read more

Statement in German national parliament: close the vaccine gap in Africa

Today our global health advocate Aliénor Devaliere was invited to speak at the German national parliament's subcommittee on Global Health. She highlighted that investments should have conditions ensuring that efforts towards regional vaccine production support local, regional and continental health needs and priorities. This is crucial to improving access to vaccines in Africa, by African manufacturers, for African populations. Read more
