World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings 2024: health financing gap impact access to health in African countries

Wemos and partners attended the World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings in October 2024. We organized a session at the Civil Society Policy Forum, titled ‘How does health financing affect access to healthcare?’, featuring insights from case studies in Mozambique, Uganda, and Côte D'Ivoire. Pandemic agreement negotiations reveal key divides and finance gap

Member states of the World Health Organization gathered in Geneva from 4 – 15 November for the 12th round of negotiations on a pandemic agreement. Progress is slow, stumbling blocks including access to medical countermeasures, sharing of knowledge and technology and investments in prevention and surveillance of disease outbreaks. Moreover, there is not enough attention for the need for equitable finance. Read more

The cost of austerity: Wemos’ study assesses the impact of the IMF programme in Zambia

Austerity measures imposed under the IMF's loan programme in Zambia have exacerbated economic inequalities and worsened access to healthcare for the population, especially affecting people already in vulnerable situations. This is the conclusion of a case study we conducted together with partners in Zambia. Read more

On 16 November 2024, Wemos was present at the Afrikadag 2024, in Pakhuis de Zwijger, in Amsterdam. In our session, titled ‘Tax Wars: The Fight for Universal Healthcare and Financial Justice’, we discussed the profound impact of tax justice on human rights, including access to health, with a panel of experts. Government drastically cuts funding for civil society organizations

Today, Minister Klever of Foreign Trade & Development Aid informed parliament in a letter that she plans to cut more than 70% of funding for civil society organizations in the Netherlands and low- and middle-income countries. We urge the House of Representatives to oppose this decision. Read more
