Launch of handbook on monetary policies for economic justice

19/5/2022 - Report

On Monday 23 May we will launch the handbook on monetary policy that we developed with partners. It explains monetary policy to non-economists: how it interacts with fiscal policies; how mainstream economic thinking has influenced monetary policy making over the last decades; and what alternatives policy makers should explore to ensure that monetary policymaking is guided by principles of equity, well-being and human rights.

As part of our Finance for Health work and advocacy on equitable expansion of fiscal space, we collaborated with partners to explore monetary policy alternatives. We developed the CSO Handbook: Advocacy on Monetary Policies for Economic Justice as an instrument to strengthen civil society engagement and advocacy on monetary policies at the national level. Given recent developments in the global economy, characterised by substantial increases in interest rates and inflation, understanding how monetary policies work and how they interact with fiscal policies is more important than ever in the fight for economic justice.
